Rotoroa, Taupo, Wellington - Still Loving the Northland

Due to the surrounding vistas we enjoyed an effortless 6 hour drive through Central North Island to the small town of Rotorau, home of Maori culture, geysers and hot mud pools. We visited Te Puia where we watched Maori apprentices carving, weaving and local tribal members dancing. We also saw numerous powerful geysers and thick, boiling mud pools.
Two days later, we left Rotorau to venture another 2 hours to the wonderful lake side town of Taupo where the setting was idyllic, food was wonderful and wine plentiful...not to mention the fabulous hot mineral spa at the hotel. We stayed 2 nights to enjoy all the sites including a long walk to the sparkling clear, green Huka Falls, and a Junior Triathlon for youngsters 15 years and younger competing from from all over New Zealand. The responsibility of moving South pulled us away from Taupo where 6 hours driving brought us to Wellington to return our rental car prior to taking the ferry to Picton.
